Which side took the weather?
Make a note. Rain pushed sideways can get beneath a lap that sheds ordinary vertical rain without trouble. Side flashings, verges and ridge details can also be tested more severely by wind.
A slate can move sideways
People look for a slate that has slipped down. Sideways movement can reduce cover while leaving the row looking almost normal from the pavement. This is one reason close inspection sometimes finds a defect that photographs miss.
Chimneys are exposed on four faces
Rain can strike the side of a stack that normally stays relatively dry. Small cracks in pointing or poor lead details may only show during that combination of wind and rain.
Do not seal the lower edge
Roof coverings are arranged in layers. Closing the visible lower gap with mastic can interfere with drainage and trap water. Restore the lap or flashing detail that is supposed to keep rain out.
